YOUNGSTERS beat off tough competition from other schools to win a speaking competition.

A team of three girls from St Mary's School in Ascot won the zone final of the Rotary Youth Speaks competition last week which was organised by the Rotary Club of Ascot.

The girls, Hebe Bourne, Lucy Gaynor and Derbhla Slevin, chose 'From Bearded to Beautiful' as their expert subject and argued that men should pay more attention to style, fashion, make-up and grooming. Colin Corio, president of the Rotary Club of Ascot, said: "It is always a pleasure to hear these young people speaking so eloquently, and I am amazed how the quality of their presentation just seems to get better and better year by year."

The trio, aged 11 to 13, will now go through to the district final next month where they will compete against other teams from Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire.

The Youth Speaks competitions are held all across the country.
