A CYCLEPATH from Ascot to Newbury has taken a step closer to completion after a new stage was approved.

The route 422 will run from Newbury to Ascot through the town centre of Reading once completed.

West Berkshire Council has now approved the first section of the cycle highway to the area between Thatcham and Newbury.

The plans involve the removing of lamp posts and road signs while the cycle lanes are added and the pavements are widened.

Route 422 is on track to be completed by Spring 2019.

Councillor Jeanette Clifford, Executive Member for Highways said: “These improvements will make it even easier to travel between Newbury, Thatcham and Reading by bike.

"The journey will be safer and more enjoyable and I hope it will encourage more people to venture out on their bikes. The benefits will not just be enjoyed by cyclists.

"It’s good for everyone when people get out of their cars and choose to cycle or walk instead.”
