A TWO-TIME cancer survivor has opened up about how fundraising has helped her life, as the tally from this year's Ascot Relay for Life event was unveiled.

At a gala wrap party at Ascot Racecourse held last month, the organising team presented a cheque for more than £120,000 to Cancer Research UK.

Breast cancer survivor Auriole Wells joined the Relay three years ago and has never looked back since.

Ms Wells, 58, was first diagnosed with the disease in 1995 and was on remission until it returned in 2013 on a routine mammogram.

She said: "I personally feel incredibly lucky. I am one of the lucky ones.

"When I first had cancer, I had to travel to Hammersmith for treatment whereas now I can go to the Royal Berkshire Clinic in Bracknell.

"It is much more local and that makes it a lot easier. If these facilities were not there I am not sure what would happen."

The Bracknell resident is extremely grateful to be in an area where cancer care is taken seriously and is very well addressed.

She has nothing but praise for the Relay for Life team.

"Everyone works incredibly hard for it," she added.

"Cancer research is changing all the time thanks to it. People are surveying new things and new treatments."

In all, the 2016 Relay around Ascot Racecourse raised £122,629.31 for the fight against cancer.

Now the organisers hope to rake in enough money next year to break £1 million, in time for the tenth anniversary of the fundraising drive.

Rose Dalton, part of the committee behind the Relay, said: "To make £1 million in just ten events would be absolutely incredible for the Relay and its beneficiary Cancer Research UK."
