THE Royal Borough is focusing on teenagers during the national Foster Care Fortnight which began on Monday.

It runs until Sunday, June 14 and aims to increase public awareness of foster caring in hopes of recruiting more people to volunteer. The council is particularly keen to encourage more people to foster children aged 10 and over and teenagers.

It is currently responsible for around 120 children who are looked after by 51 foster families and say the majority of children with foster families are in their teens.

Cllr Natasha Airey, cabinet member for youth services and safeguarding, said: “It is amazing the amount of time and effort that our carers invest in making local children’s lives happier. They really are unsung heroes of our community.

“Foster Care Fortnight not only showcases the great work of existing foster carers but is an advert for anyone who is thinking of becoming a new foster carer.” Foster carers have to be 18 years and over and can be married, cohabiting or single. There is no need to be a home owner, providing the accommodation has a spare bedroom, and carers can be employed or without employment.
