Clive Lawson-Smith attempted Cape Town’s famous Cape Argus cycle tour on Sunday March 15 - a gruelling 109km route - and raised more than £350 for St John’s Ambulance.

The 58-year-old was recently elected chairman of St John’s Ambulance Berkshire Priory Group and joined the 34,000 other entrants to complete the course with his step-daughter Emma Balfour Evans.

Clive said: “I cycled the race for the first time last year and wanted to be able to complete it once again. I am not someone who usually cycles regularly though, so I have had to work hard at improving my fitness over the winter in readiness for the race.

“In my new role as chairman of the Berkshire County Priory Group, the life saving work of St John Ambulance and its volunteers were at the forefront of my mind as I took on the challenge. I hope any donations will, in their small way, go towards supporting the valuable work of the charity in all areas, but specifically in its ability to teach more members of the public life saving first aid skills.” The route takes cyclists around Table Mountain and is the world’s largest individually timed race.
