A YOUNG athlete from Wokingham has been selected for the Wheelchair Basketball squad at the 2018 School Games.

Liam Barker, 14, who attends St Crispin's School, in London Road, plays for the Thames Valley Kings and will compete for England South at the games at Loughborough University from August 30 to September 2.

The point guard has an impressive track record including captaining the South East U15 side, and is delighted to have been called up for the School Games this year having missed out on a place in 2017.

Liam will join more than 1,400 athletes competing across 11 sports at the Games, five of which include disability disciplines, giving young people an experience of high-level competition in a multi-sport environment.

During the games, Liam will stay in the dedicated Athletes' Village on the university campus, take part in the School Games ceremony and compete in front of huge crowds of spectators.

Ali Oliver, Chief Executive Officer of the Youth Sport Trust, said: “The School Games National Finals provide a great opportunity for talented young athletes like Liam.

"Competitors get a real taste of what it’s like to be part of a world-class sporting event at the amazing sporting venues of Loughborough University, and the event is a great way to see our future sporting champions in action today.”
