THE COUNCIL has erected a series of wooden sculptures at one of the most popular open spaces in the town.

The Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead has joined up with the community charity Groundwork South to erect the scupltures at Allens Field, South Ascot.

The charity's chartered landscape architect Ruth Shelton designed and project managed the sculpture and path installation.

The carvings and landscape features form part of an educational trail that depicts an egg's journey to become a butterfly through its various life stages.

Cllr Samantha Rayner, lead member for culture and communities, said: “These sculptures will provide an incentive for local schools and families to visit the field, as well as teach them more about the fascinating wildlife that form part of the biodiversity of this beautiful park and wildlife area.

“These stunning carvings add another reason to visit a much treasured park in the Royal Borough.”

Landscape architect Ruth Shelton added: “I have long admired Groundwork South and am delighted to be included in such a great project. The inspiration for this scheme came from the sculptures and butterfly shaped earth work already onsite. It seemed appropriate to build on what was already there.

“The wood used was recycled from a Wellingtonia Giant Redwood tree taken down this winter and transformed by the very talented Mike Wood into these playful sculptures.”
