Struggling Bracknell school promises to improve despite being slammed by education watchdog

Sandy Lane Primary School in Bracknell were given a 'requires improvement' rating by Ofsted following an inspection of the school in November.

The school was rated 'good' in personal development, behaviour and welfare but were criticised for poor pupil outcomes, leadership and quality of teaching.

Ofsted have however acknowledged that the newly formed leadership team is ambitious and that clear improvement from the school as a whole is evident.

Brian Poxon, chair of governers said: "Sandy Lane governors were pleased with the recent Ofsted report as it recognises the positive changes the new head Mr Davies has made in conjunction with the new leadership team and staff.

Ofsted has criticised the school for the children's lack of progress during their reception year, which consequently leads to them being not fully prepared for year one.

Mr Poxon added: "Mr Davies and his team have already made improvements to the quality of teaching and learning which we hope will translate to strong results.

"Every school's success is dependant on the teachers, parents and pupils working together and we feel with Mr Davies' leadership Sandy Lane will be at the centre of the local community. Our focus is now on supporting the school and its pupils achieve Good at the next Ofsted inspection."

The school, which cares for more than 500 children was last inspected in May 2015 and received the same rating.

Since then, the school has had a high turnover of staff and in September 2017, appointed a new head who says he is committed to guiding the school to a bright future.

Head teacher, Neil Davies said: "I am delighted that Ofsted recognised the changes made and that Sandy Lane is on the right path of improvement.

"Much as we know there are areas that we need to improve, I am confident that with the continued support of staff, governors and parents, the children of Sandy Lane can look forward to a successful future.”
