A PETROL station could soon close down and another built just down the road.

The owners of Think Ford Wokingham have confirmed plans to close the petrol station on their Finchampstead Road site, citing financial reasons.

In its place, the car showroom will be expanded.

Manager Richard Hardy said: "It has become beyond economic repair. The tanks are going and the pumps are going.

"There is no money in petrol anymore. We don't make anything from petrol, that's why all new petrol stations have a shop attached.

"We are just going to have used cars for sale."

The news comes weeks after Tesco requested permission from Wokingham Borough Council to build a new petrol station further along the same road.

The supermarket chain has submitted a planning application for a filling station and above ground fuel tank.

A handful of residents have expressed concerns about the proposals.

Nigel Birch, of Tangley Drive, wrote: " I object to the plans for a 24 hour petrol station on the grounds that there will be additional noise at any time of day or night and light pollution all night.

"Currently Tescos operates a food store which closes down after 11pm and is not a 24 hour store."

Mr Birch's neighbour Tracy Pearce was worried about parking at the supermarket.

She argued: "I already have to drive round for a space. If you are going to loose part of the car park, this will make this issue even worse. Where are we supposed to park?

"The additional congestion and traffic will result in higher pollution levels."
