A SERIES of lectures that date back more than three and a half centuries will this year focus on climate change.
In 1647 Thomas Winder, a grocer from London, paid for a sermon to be preached each year in Warfield Church on or around Guy Fawkes Night.
Of late the talks, known as the Winder Lectures, have focused on contemporary issues from a Christian perspective.
On November 5 St Michael’s Church in Warfield will host Reverend Dave Bookless of the Christian environment charity A Rocha.
Rev Bookless is completing a PhD in Theology and Biodiversity Conservation at Cambridge University. He will speak on the topic ‘Is there any good new for creation?’
A church spokesperson said: “Climate change and the environment have been in the news a lot this year. Hurricanes in the Caribbean, devastating floods in Nepal, India and Bangladesh; breaking ice caps and severe droughts in parts of Africa.
“Should we care about the world that our children will inherit? How do we feed a hungry world and balance the needs of the poor with the pressures of population growth and global consumerism?”
The lecture runs from 6.30pm until 9pm.
