SCHOOL STUDENTS learned the art of African drumming in specially designed workshops.

Charters School invited in groups from Inspire Works, who organised for a practical introduction to the style of Western African drumming.

In the sessions, students from year seven learned a traditional piece as played in West Africa, and had the opportunity to improvise and develop ensemble playing.

The group used 30 djembe drums, as well as other African musical instruments, to help create the music.

Mr Mike McKenna, Director of Music at Charters School said, "It is always really exciting when professionals visit Charters School and run these workshops. It’s been a fantastic experience for pupils who have enjoyed performing on authentic instruments and learning more about West African Drumming and its culture.

"They have already done some African Drumming in their lessons and it will be interesting to see how they progress following the workshop."
