SEX AND RELATIONSHIPS education in the town is among the best in the country, according to leading sexual health charities.

Bracknell Forest Council has a scheme for young people between the ages of 11 and 19, which has now been recognised by Brook and the Family Planning Association.

The programme, which is put in place in secondary schools throughout the Bracknell Forest area, covers topics such as consent and contraceptives, with the aim of ensuring young people are informed.

A panel of young people worked with Brook and the Family Planning Association to pick the best examples of sex education to be rolled out nationally, and the Bracknell scheme was one of the five shortlisted.

This means that the programme could help shape the national curriculum in 2019.

Cllr Gareth Barnard, executive member for children, young people and learning, said: “I am delighted our RSE programme has been recognised as one of the top five in the country.

“We are committed to ensuring all children and young people get the best start to life and this programme gives young people the support they need to feel confident in making safe and appropriate choices, an essential part of equipping them for adult life.

“Having our programme featured in the report will mean the team’s hard work will not only help young people in the borough, it will also benefit those up and down the country, for years to come.”
