I count myself as somewhat of a KFC fan, or just a fan of any fried chicken, for that note, so when I heard about the new Double Down burger I was ecstatic, writes Daniel Blackham.

My girlfriend had alerted me to the phenomenon by saying "this is right up your street!" and to my knowledge she was right.

For those of you who have not seen what the 'burger' looks like, it is a new idea from the Colonel.

Essentially the premise is a normal chicken burger, with cheese and bacon sandwiched inside as well.

For the Double Down though, the good folk at KFC have decided that the bread in a burger is the worst part, so they have got rid of it all together.

Yep, that is right, the double down is two fillets of fried chicken with cheese and bacon between the two fillets.

I will be honest, however, I do not like cheese, and I went to the restaurant in Broad Street, which is a Halal restaurant, so no bacon.

Usually I order a boneless banquet meal, which is three fillets of chicken, chips, a side and some popcorn chicken, so I am used to the mini-fillets, however on this occasion, I just did not feel excited by them.

When I returned to the office to have my lunch, I thought this could only be good, chicken, chips, gravy, no fuss.

There is something missing about this meal however, just something not there. It could be the fact I chose to have the meal without cheese, or the fact the chain did not offer bacon. It did not feel like a full meal.

The barbecue sauce in between the two fillets was a little too overpowering, and almost took the taste away from the chicken, which somehow lost the taste of the secret blend of 11 herbs and spices.

Only running until mid-November, I cannot help but feel this deal is somewhat of a gimmick, and something to tell your friends you tried rather than actually order regularly.

In conclusion, the meal cost me £5.79, with an added gravy for £1, so from a tenner I only got a little over £3 change. A further disappointment. After I was finished, I just wanted a normal KFC meal.
