A CAREHOME forced to shut after a disastrous inspection will be demolished and rebuilt.

In February 2015 an unannounced inspection of Birdsgrove Nursing Home in Warfield uncovered a string of failures.

Staff did not to respond to one resident in 'very obvious distress' whose shouts of 'please help me' were ignored. Another person was left lying in bed for hours waiting to be washed.

The Aster Healthcare run home was placed in special measures by the Care Quality Commission and, following an unsuccessful appeal, closed at the end of 2016.

On Tuesday Bracknell Forest Council granted Hamberley Development permission to raze the building and construct a 77 bedroom home in its place.

A statement from Hamberley Development reads: "The intention is to provide a high quality and attractive building that will form an important part of the local community and that will provide jobs for local people.

"The proposed care home on the Warfield Road site will provide 24 hour support and care for the frail elderly comprising a range of residential, nursing and dementia care services."

The current care home has stood on the site since 1958 and has, according to Hamberley, fallen into disrepair and below modern standards.

Only eight of 77 bedrooms are ensuite, rooms are either too big or too small and the building is not designed to cater for people with dementia.

The new home will offer ensuite bathrooms in all rooms, 24-hour nursing provision and communal facilities such as a hairdressers and cinema.

It is calculated the home will provide up to 100 jobs, 70 full time and 30 part time, with 25 staff onsite at any given time.
