CARNIVAL POOL redevelopment plans have caused a stir amongst residents due to the proposed housing.

The plans, submitted by Wokingham Borough Council, involve the demolition of three buildings in the area, with three others replacing them.

Big Apple Bowling, Southgate House and Carnival Pool Leisure Centre will all be raised to the ground to make way for the new leisure centre, swimming pool, library, and tower of flats.

Gareth Braithwaite, of Murdoch Road, commented: "I am not in any way unsupportive of what sounds like an interesting scheme.

"My heart sinks however when I read of another 55 x 1 & 2 bed apartments in the centre of Wokingham.

"I live on Murdoch Rd and our lives are becoming increasingly miserable with the increase in traffic in the town and down our road.

"Can you at least defer the building of yet more apartments until the relief road is built. As it is we have all the traffic from the development on station road coming our way to get out of Wokingham.

"Another 55 x 2 cars per flat will surely see everything keel over.

"Please be sensible. No more housing in central Wokingham until the relief road is built."

The new housing isn't the only part of the plans causing upset with residents.

Robert Clarkson, of Southlands Road, wrote: "As a regular user of the Carnival Pool, I think the present facilities are more than adequate. I believe the long period of closure will be detrimental to my health and well being and I object to the use of my council tax for this purpose.

"Similarly, I believe the present Library to be totally fit for purpose.

"The council would be far better spending our money on demolishing and rebuilding the parade of shops at the NE end of Peach Street which (are) quite frankly an eyesore."

Liz Johns, a Wokingham resident, said: "The plan does not allow for any residential parking.

"It is absolutely ridiculous to think that none of these residents will have cars.

"Most, if not all, will have at least one vehicle, and there will be a sizeable proportion of those who will have more than one vehicle per household."

There is also a petition to keep the toddler paddling pool at Carnival Pool, as the plans do not include one.
