Car owners are being warned to be more vigilant than ever after a spike of thefts.

Over the past week, there have been 12 thefts or car crimes in the area, with one car stolen off a driveway.

Thames Valley Police released the information in the hope that it will encourage car owners to be more careful and implement as many safety features as they can.

The statement read: "Most vehicle crime is preventable, it can take as little as 10 seconds for a thief to steal something from your car, therefore remember the following:

  • Never leave items in your car, sunglasses, loose change, satnav – the thief will search through the glovebox and side pockets – we support the empty car campaign.
  • Always close the windows, lock the doors and activate any security devices.
  • Report anything or anyone suspicious immediately to the police on 101.
  • Never leave items in the car or van whether valuable or not - it only encourages someone to break in and find out it's a paper bag.
  •  Report anything or anyone suspicious immediately to the police on 101.
