John Redwood has spoken of his delight at the news of a £1.3bn investment in schools nationwide.

It was announced on Monday that an extra £1.3bn had been made available for English schools, with the money coming from "efficiencies and savings".

Writing on his online diary, Wokingham MP Mr Redwood stated: "I was pleased today that the Secretary of State announced £1300 million more for English schools across 2018-19 and 2019-20.

"I had been pressing her and the Treasury hard to make more money available in total for schools, as had others.

"I, with others, had pressed for more of the money to be granted as a per pupil payment so that Councils like Wokingham and West Berkshire would benefit fully.

"For the first two years the “national funding formula will set indicative budgets for each school” but “local authorities will continue to set a local formula as they do now for determining individual schools budgets in 2018-19 and 2019-20.” The details of the new national formula will be set out in September."

The Rt Hon. Justine Greening told commons: "I'm confirming our plans to get on with introducing a national funding formula in 2018/19, and I can announce that this will additionally now be supported by significant extra investment into the core schools budget over the next two years."

This news was too little, too late for Forest headteacher Mary Sandell, who this year has announced her resignation over a lack of funding.

Mrs Sandell's statement said: "I feel unable to deliver the quality of education the boys at The Forest so clearly deserve.

"I did not enter the teaching profession to make cuts that narrow the curriculum, or to reduce the number of teachers and increase class sizes, and yet my hand has been forced, and I see no immediate easing of the situation."

Mrs Sandell's resignation will take effect from August 31 2017.
