A BURNED down shed was the result of a spate of break ins at an allotment over the last two weeks.

The incidents, that took place at Ormonde Road, Wokingham, have included damage to 27 plots on the allotment, including serious damage to two sheds.

There were two incidents, taking place on Saturday, January 21 and Sunday, January 29 in the early hours of the morning.

A spokesman for Wokingham town council said: “We have experienced earlier incidents but these have been at a much lower level and limited to one or two plots.

“As you might imagine, Wokingham Town Council is extremely concerned and very disappointed that such activity has taken place. The Council is working with Thames Valley Police who are actively investigating the matter and very much hopes that the criminals will be apprehended and charged.”

Councillor Mark Ashwell, who represents the Evendon ward, said: “We have had two attempts of break ins. It’s turned into something really quite sinister. We are distraught really. Over the years we have really looked after the allotments. The owners, they have put a lot of work into it.

“Between us and the police we are collaborating to catch the offenders.”

Dianne Appleyard, from the National Allotment Society, said that they do not comment on individual cases, but advised people to “check our website on how to keep your site secure.”

The allotment, that is home to 186 plots, is based next to Latimer Road allotments and the recreation ground.

Allotment holders are advised to make sure the gate is locked when leaving the premises and report any damage to police as soon as possible.

A spokesman for Thames Valley Police said: “Anyone with any information can call Thames Valley Police on 101.”
