THE brother of a convicted criminal has spoken of the impact his brother’s actions has had on their family.

Jamie Barrett broke into his family’s home in Lindenhill Road, Bracknell on September 7 last year and stole money, games consoles and video games.

Seven days after stealing from the family home the 28-year-old from Landsdowne Avenue, Slough, mugged a woman of her handbag in an alleyway in Merryhill Road.

He had cycled past her, nearly knocking to the floor, and a few seconds later the victim felt her bag being pulled and she turned to see Barrett who then snatched the bag and fled the scene, jurors were told.

“I never really expected him to do something like this, I did not think he would stoop that low,” his brother Robbie Barrett told the News on Thursday, January 19.

“I cannot really say how he turned out like this, he has had plenty of chances to sort himself out but he didn’t want to, what he did has had such a big impact on the whole of our family.

“I had been in hospital and I came home and I saw glass all over the carpet and a brick on the floor and I realised all of my stuff had gone missing.”

CCTV images shown in court identified Barrett at the property on September 7.

He was arrested and charged with theft and burglary on September 15, 2015.

He admitted burglary but denied theft and was convicted of robbery unanimously by jurors at Reading Crown Court on Friday, January 13.

“These offences have both had a lasting effect on their victims, who have been left distressed by Barrett’s actions,” said investigating officer, police constable Marcus Burrows.

“Now that he will be serving time in prison, I hope that he has a long, hard think about his actions and how they have affected others.

“I hope that Barrett seeks the help and support he needs so that when he is released from prison he does not re-offend.”

Barrett was sentenced to two years and two months’ imprisonment on January 13.

Out of respect for the privacy of the woman who was mugged, the News has chosen not to print a picture of Barrett.
