A RESTAURANT owner has been slapped with a hefty bill for failing food hygiene checks.

Mohammed Bashir Khan, owner and operator of Narvis Grill in Bath Road, Slough, was ordered to pay more than £4,700 after pleading guilty to a number of offences.

The 60-year-old admitted failing to keep his premises clean, failing to effectively clean articles and equipment with which food comes into contact, and failing to provide materials for cleaning hands and for hygienic drying at the wash hand basin.

The food safety breaches were discovered during a routine inspection of Narvis Grill on July 28 last year.

Mr Khan was sentenced at Reading Magistrates' Court on Friday, September 16 and was fined £500 for each of the three offences and ordered to pay costs of £3,217.60 and a £50 victim surcharge, bringing his total bill to £4,767.60.

Councillor Paul Sohal, commissioner for regulation and consumer protection, said: “Food safety rules are there for a reason – to protect the public from harm.

“Clearly the necessary procedures weren’t in place at Narvis Grill at the time of the inspection and the council had a responsibility to take action.

“I hope this serves as a warning to other food businesses that we take the safety of consumers very seriously.”
