LABOUR's former parliamentary candidate for Bracknell has joined calls for leader Jeremy Corbyn to resign amid a turbulent few days for the party.

James Walsh, who contested the Bracknell seat for Labour at the 2015 General Election, is one of 57 former parliamentary candidates who have slammed Mr Corbyn's leadership of the party and claimed "we cannot win an election unless the country believes that our party leader is a credible Prime Minister".

Despite stating they admire the service Jeremy Corbyn has offered to the party, they claim Labour would "fail" if a general election were to be called today.

Tweeting a link to LabourList, Mr Walsh, a current borough councillor in Guildford, said: "I signed because millions of voters deserve better and we need a strong, viable response to the new world we're in."

Labour's parliamentary candidate for Reading West, Victoria Groulef, is also one of those to have signed the damning letter.

The letter has been sent to John Cryer, the chairman of the Parliamentary Labour Party, amid growing tensions within the party itself.

It comes after a dramatic few days in which 19 members of Labour's shadow cabinet resigned and Hilary Benn, former shadow foreign secretary and son of Tony Benn, was sacked for rebelling against Mr Corbyn following the EU referendum result.

The letter states: "We have come to believe that were a General Election to be held today, Labour would fail these two tests.

"We admire the service that Jeremy Corbyn has offered to our Party as leader in the past year and his long service as an MP and within the Union movement.  However, we believe we must accept that we cannot achieve our shared ambitions for the future of the United Kingdom without a leader able to command the confidence of the country.

"That is why we believe that the Labour Party must seek a change of leadership."

Earlier today Mr Walsh called on Boris Johnson to appear in the House of Commons.

James Walsh has been approached by the News for further comment.
