A 'suspect package' in Bracknell town centre that sparked fears of a bomb turned out to be a bag of personal belongings.

Police were called to Stanley Walk at 12.46pm this afternoon to reports of a suspicious package but have now confirmed the bag was taken safely away.

The front entrance to Princess Square has been reopened and the police cordon in the town centre has been removed.

Thames Valley Police spokesperson Charlotte Redman said: "We were called at 12.46pm to reports of a suspect package. We were called as a precaution."

Police urge residents not to leave bags unattended.

People took to social media this afternoon as confusion mounted over the ongoing incident:

Commenting on the Bracknell News' Facebook page, Sharn Taylor, said: "My mum works in Princess Square! Just phoned her, the front shops have been evacuated, but her shop along with other shops are still in there 'working' but the shoppers can't get out! So they are walking around looking in the open shops.

"Security haven't spoken to them to let them know what's happening or anything! So if anything was to actually happen her along with everyone would be buried under the car park!!"
