WORK to give the town's High Street car park a facelift will begin on Monday.

The project will see the existing lights, fire alarm and electrical infrastucture replaced, which will mean parts of the car park will be fenced off to the public, while the work is carried out.

Though the site set-up will begin on Monday, the first fencing off of levels of the car park, starting with level nine, is estimated to start on Monday, March 7.

From there, a maximum of two levels at a time will be fenced off.

At the entrance to the car park, there will be an up-to-date layout plan showing where work is taking place on each particular day.

This will be in place for the duration of the project.

The work, part of the £240m town centre regeneration project, is expected to take around five months to complete.

Cllr Chris Turrell, executive member for transport and planning, said: "This work has been put together in such a way as to keep as much of the car park as possible open and available for public use at all times.

"Residents and visitors alike will benefit hugely once the work is completed and the already outstanding reputation of our town centre car park facilities, reflected in the awarding from Park Mark earlier this month, will be enhanced."
