A DRIVER has been hospitalised and arrested after his car careered off the road and crashed into a hedge near the Coppid Beech roundabout this morning.

Queues of traffic were backed up on to the Reading-bound A329 after the road had to be closed shortly after the collision at 10.10am today.

A number of other vehicles including two BMWs and a Ford Fiesta are said to have been involved but only the driver of the car that left the road was injured.

He was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence and has been taken to the Royal Berkshire Hospital for treatment to his injuries.

Blood and breath samples will also be taken to confirm whether he was over the legal driving limit of alcohol or had taken any illicit substances.

The road had to be closed for the car to be recovered and was reopened to traffic at 12.22pm.

A Thames Valley Police spokesman said: "Police were called at 10.10am to Coppid Beech roundabout A329, to reports of a car having gone into a hedge and two more cars blocking the road.

"The driver of one of the vehicles was injured and was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence.

"He has been taken to Royal Berkshire Hospital for treatment."

The road was closed for recovery of the car that was in the hedge. The road was reopened at 12.22pm.

A spokesman for South Central Ambulance confirmed they had taken one male by road ambulance to the Royal Berkshire Hospital but the extent of his injuries was not yet clear.
