The cadets will be forced to leave their current home on Wellington Road when the Carnival Pool site is redeveloped.

The borough council offered to help 10 Platoon Wokingham-REME army cadets and the Thames Valley’s 2499 air cadets squadron find a new home.

The new site has to be agreed with the Ministry of Defence. The first suggestion in Viking Field was turned down because the MoD deemed it too expensive to connect any new premises to mains services.

The second site in Elizabeth Road has been given approval by the MoD, but has left parents concerned over access to the site.

John Downey, chairman of the civilian committee who oversee the cadets, said: “The site is currently a football pitch.

“Pyke Close is a little cul-de-sac. It goes to some small bungalows and there’s no parking or passing space, while Elizabeth Road is full of cars.

“There’s football pitch there at the moment and the team that plays there were unaware of all of this.

“We would end up having to take some of their space for the parade ground and buildings.

“It’s vitally important we continue to work actively and constructively with all stake-holders for the benefit of current and future Wokingham cadets.” He said parents had asked Wokingham Borough Council to look at moving the cadets to Gray’s Farm.

But building work there would not be able to start until the summer of 2017.

That was the agreement between the council and the previous owners of the land.

Philip Mirfin, executive member for regeneration, said that although parents may have objections, Wokingham Council would base their decision on the MoD’s observations.

He said: “I have had a discussion with a couple of parents and they put forward Gray’s Farm as a possible site.

“I said if that’s what they want, they should put it forward, but that would leave them with no building to use.” Mr Downey said the cadets would likely have to have a temporary home even if they agreed to using the Elizabeth Road site.

He said the chances of the MoD moving into Elizabeth Road by spring next year were slim, but the cadets would be willing to spend longer in a temporary home if they ended in the right place.
