A PAIR of Bracknell brothers are to pedal the length of the UK raising funds for research into a disease which has devastated their dad’s life.

The Whiteside brothers, Martin and Brian, will – together with their brother-in-law Andrew Browne – set off from Land’s End on Friday cycling to John O’Groats at the tip of Scotland.

The trio are cycling the route to raise money and awareness for Diabetes UK, inspired by their father Brian, who was diagnosed with Type One diabetes in 1972.

Brian, 35, said: “It was hard growing up with my dad having diabetes as he could be fine one minute then experiencing a hypo, which is low blood glucose levels, the next, but he has a fantastic outlook on life and is a real inspiration.

“I also have friends who have Type Two diabetes and as a team we also want to raise awareness about the importance of early diagnosis and we hope that any donations will help to find a possible cure so all the training and organisational effort for this epic cycle ride is worth it.” Bob Whiteside was given a new lease of life when he had a pancreas and kidney transplant in May 2007 meaning he no longer required insulin, but he still has to cope with some of the other consequences of living with the lifelong condition.

This includes partial eyesight loss, strokes and having to use a mobility scooter because of poor circulation in his legs.

'Team Bob’ hope to complete the ride by Saturday, July 26, by covering 100 miles a day and are looking to raise £1,000 for their efforts.

Their dad will not be far away on their journey – he, wife Dot and family friend Peter Hollick will be following the trio in a motor home as their support team.

Lewis Honeywill, Diabetes UK South East regional fundraiser, said: “We are very grateful for the brothers’ support on this amazing national biking tour.” To donate to the cause, go to www.justgiving.com/teambob2014
