A collection of 25 giant poppies have been commissioned for locations all across the town by Bracknell Forest Council, with most of the pieces destined to be displayed on the town’s roundabouts.

The project is due to be completed for unveiling on August 4, marking a century since Britain declared war on Germany. Cllr Tony Virgo, who has helped to organise and implement the floral tribute, believes that they will get people talking.

He said: “When you see these poppies they will make you think. I have seen the first model and it made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up.” The pieces, based on the official Royal British Legion poppy, are made by Sunningdale model builders Atom, which also works on the famous Christmas display at Selfridges.

Upon completion there will be an opening ceremony with those involved in the project, but there won’t be any accompanying plaques or information panels.

Cllr Virgo said: “That was something I didn’t want to do. You don’t have to explain everything and I think sometimes things are over-explained and it gets boring. I believe they will be iconic and who knows, it may create more interest in using spaces like roundabouts in a creative way.” Each of the poppies will be set in a concrete base on a roundabout except one which is due to be placed outside the front of Bracknell College.

They are set to remain in place until Remembrance Day, with cllr Virgo keen to see further use of the spaces.

After the poppies are taken down there are plans to replace them with Christmas trees in the winter.
