From the Himalayas to the Yorkshire Dales, one Bracknell bank manager is on a mountain-scaling mission – all in the name of charity.

Sam Flitton, Halifax branch manager in Bracknell, has set her sights on the Yorkshire Three Peaks challenge, a 40km route over tough terrain in under 12 hours. She is doing it in aid of the Alzheimer’s Society.

The 40-year-old’s goal is to raise £1,000 and as Alzheimer’s Society is Halifax’s charity of the year, the bank will match the amount of money she raises.

The Three Peaks run this summer takes in the tops of Pen-y-Ghent, Whernside and Ingleborough, with nearly 1,500m of elevation change across the race.

Now in training for the July 19 run, Mrs Flitton, from Harmans Water, said: “I’ve been doing 15 to 20km walks at the weekends and going to the gym a lot.” But she has one other card up her sleeve: “Last year I trekked up to Everest Base Camp.” Mrs Flitton’s adventure in 2013 to the base camp of the world’s highest mountain was done in aid of Tree of Hope, a charity aimed at improving the lives of sick and disabled children.

After succeeding she has already booked to do the trek again next March, on top of the Yorkshire race this July: “This was supposed to be my year off,” she joked.

“But it’s all for people who need support and if you can help out then why shouldn’t you?” Though the Three Peaks is a very different challenge to trekking to Everest, Mrs Fritton has picked up a few valuable preparation tips.

She said: “I learned the hard way that you need to train while wearing a backpack so at the gym I now train carrying 10-20 kilos.

“And especially squats – lots of squats!”
