YOUNGSTERS at Garth Hill College were able to see the effects of a car crash – and were warned about the dangers of drink driving.

More than 100 sixth form students at the Bracknell school are taking part in a two-week road safety awareness project. This aims to create responsible drivers. Emergency services brought a wrecked car to the school for the demonstration, with the scenario being a young drink driver who has caused the crash, which has left a passenger – his mother – injured.

The youngsters were given a commentary as the Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service, Thames Valley Police and Bracknell Forest Council’s road safety team demonstrated the full process of cutting a crash victim from a vehicle.

Pupils described the presentation as “excellent” and “surreal”. Bradley Austin, said: “There is a huge cost involved by one person’s mistake – a great demonstration and we really appreciate the services involved coming in to school to give us a taste of reality.” Head of sixth form Julie Rumble added: “Our sixth formers have a weekly enrichment programme which covers a range of subjects and activities aimed at helping them prepare for the future whether that is at university or work.

“In addition, we offer sessions close to their hearts – hence today’s activity which is aimed at promoting a healthy attitude to driving before they get behind the wheel.”
