Wokingham’s sixth annual wine festival landed with a splash.

Hundreds of people visited the annual event, held at the town hall, Market Place, Wokingham, on Sunday December 8, with tickets costing £6 on the door.

The event showcased wines from around the world, from France, Italy, Spain, Switzerland, New Zealand and Australia.

The day raised around £750 for the Reading and Wokingham branch of the MS Society, based at Lower Earley, which it has done for the past six years.

Rosemary Tocock, chairman of the Reading and Wokingham branch, said: “Everyone enjoyed themselves and tasted lots of wine, people were interested in champagne for Christmas. There wasn’t one stall that was more popular than the others, we had a wide variety.

“We’re hoping to do it again next year, the town hall is such a great venue we’re hoping to incorporate some food stalls next year to make it more of a food and drink thing, but we will still retain the wine element!” There was also a tombola, where people were able to pick corks, winning a prize if there was a number on it.

Ms Tocock added: “We’ve never heard of that before and we thought it would be different, and the merchants have enough wine!” There were 10 stalls, which was run in conjunction with the The Association of Small Direct Wine Merchants, and the Windsor Forest unicorn club.
