Lollipop men and women were honoured for their work as Wokingham's School Crossing Patrol celebrated its Diamond Jubilee on Monday.

The 24 patrollers who help people cross the road were given new uniforms - pictured - and a special commemorative badge and certificate to mark the milestone.

Dave Evans, school crossing patrol organiser, said: "Our team of dedicated, hard-working patrollers are committed to this important role in their school communities and we are looking forward to another 60 years of the service."

The service was began in the late 1940s when the government recognised the value of having a service that helped children cross roads at busy and difficult locations. The School Crossing Act came into force in 1953 with the first official patrol starting 1954.

While the uniform and sign have changed to meet modern standards - patrollers can now also stop traffic to allow pedestrians, adult or child to cross the road safely - the role is essentially the same today as it was 60 years ago.
