PUPILS will be able to learn about fruit-growing thanks to the donation of trees by Rotarians.

The Rotary Club of Easthampstead has raised money to buy six fruit trees to create an orchard for Jennett's Park Primary School to mark The Queen's Diamond Jubilee.

Appropriately, the varieties of tree chosen are the Diamond Apple and Snowdon Queen Pear.

The club's president, Suzie McRory, said: "It is a pleasure for the club to support initiatives of this nature in the local community - especially those involving children." A tree-planting ceremony was held on Wednesday last week with the Bracknell Forest Mayor, Cllr Jennie McCracken, and the Mayor of Bracknell Town, Cllr Shelagh Pile.

The two mayors jointly placed the last spadeful of earth on the final tree, watched by a large gathering of pupils.

A plaque recording the donors and the historical occasion of the planting was placed alongside the trees.

The ceremony came about after the school's headteacher, Maria Soulsby, visited the Rotary Club in January.

Ms Soulsby explained how she hoped to involve the children in hands-on horticulture, and thought a small orchard in the school's ground would help develop pupils' understanding of how to care for trees and develop a fruit crop.

The Rotary Club Easthampstead, a member of Rotary International, is seeking new members, from the Wokingham and Bracknell Forest areas.

The groups meets every Monday, except bank holidays, from 7.30pm for an 8pm start at the John Nike Leisure Centre.

The purpose of the club is to enjoy fellowship, socialise and raise money for various local and international causes.
