Colin Antink: Destiny calls for this besotted cat owner

I WONDER if you can go mad through sleep deprivation? I am sure there are lots of new mothers out there nodding their heads wearily at this. Well, no, I am not a parent, but I am, however, a besotted cat owner.

One of my cats, Destiny, came running in with her back leg held aloft in such a comical fashion I fell about laughing. Then I saw the blood. Whoa! I don’t know how she did it, but her claw was hanging off. I felt quite ill.

The cat wasn’t feeling too good about it, either. So, cue frantic trip to the vets. There ensued a struggle to investigate the wounded paw. The vets tried to hold her still, murmuring soothing words.

Destiny had a few words to say herself, and soothing they were not. (Trust me, she did not learn that language at home!)

She was going to have to have her toe amputated. So there followed surgery and a list of instructions to follow, including “Do not allow the cat to jump”.

I ask you, has anyone ever tried to tell a cat not to jump?! We then had to watch her, in case she pulled out her stitches.

Mum and I took it in turns; I slept for a couple of hours, then took over to give her some rest. Not easy. Soooo tired.

Mum tells me, sagely, that I never slept as a baby so she should be used to it. But that was 22 years ago, mother, and you are 22 years older…

Well I am really looking forward to a whole night’s blissful sleep. And any plans of becoming a parent are DEFINITELY on hold!
