Want to Get Rid of Ants?

They are tough little creatures, so you may want to be prepared if you are trying to get rid of ants.

Everybody wants to get rid of ants. Whether you're unhappy with the idea of them wandering around your home or you are simply terrified by them, they are a pest and they have to be dealt with quickly and efficiently. Unlike many other species, ants are decidedly stubborn about leaving a home. So, you will have to be patient and determined.

Like most pests, you have to remove all sources of potential food. These will not only attract them to your home, but they will also keep them coming back. Put all exposed food into sealed containers and ensure that items such as fruit are fresh and not left to rot. The cleaner you keep your home, the less likely they are to feel invited in.

Many sites that offer aid to ant-plagued homes suggest that you follow a regime of Wipe, Mop, Vacuum and Store. Keep your surfaces, counters, floors and food securely tucked away and clean so that the ants are forced to go elsewhere for food.

Another option is to kill the queen ant. This may, however, not be all that easy to do. In some cases it may be well nigh impossible, as the nest could be underground and in an unreachable location. If you can locate the nest, then you will find the queen near the centre, towards the bottom.

Should you have a really bad infestation, with thousands of ants running havoc, then this would be a good time to call in a professional exterminator. They will use several different ways of getting rid of the ants, although, it may be at some inconvenience to you. Many solutions are toxic to humans and pets so you may have to stay somewhere else for a few days.

Another old trick that works a charm, although nobody is entirely sure why, is to run a thin line of baby powder along the skirting boards in your home. Thread this line in doorways, at suspected ant entry points and where the infestation is at its worst. Ants rarely cross this line and soon they will disappear altogether.

Salt is also a good way of limiting ant problems, as it apparently sucks the moisture from their bodies, killing them quickly. You could also consider using cornmeal in the same way, as this will kill the ants themselves.

Some smells will have a negative effect on ants too. They are repulsed by odours such as cinnamon, peppermint oil, cloves and bay leaves. Crushing and sprinkling these in relevant areas may well be a very pleasant solution for you, while also getting rid of your ants. With all these solutions it is important to keep the safety of children and pets firmly in mind.

Now you have several different ways to get rid of ants, some of them costly while others are cheap and even nose-friendly. You only have to take the time to try out each option until one of them finally works.

Get rid of ants or they will become an unpleasant and irritating presence in your home.
