AN UNPUBLISHED writer has stormed into the final of the country's premier competition for business literature.

Peter Storr, 50, from Maidenhead, is up against 24 of the best business writers in Britain for the coveted Chartered Management Institute (CMI) Management Book Of The Year award.

Mr Storr's The Psychological Manager: Improve Your Performance Conversations is the only self-published book to make the final, competing against titles produced by publishing giants Pearson, SAGE and Oxford University Press.

Mr Storr said: "It is a great honour to be shortlisted for this prestigious award and it would appear I am in good company.

"This is the book for managers who want to have real, honest conversations with their staff to improve performance and promote a culture of continuous development."

He added: "Having an awareness of some fundamental and relevant psychological principles can really help you to become a better manager of people."

Peter runs consultancy firm The Psychological Manager, in Maidenhead, which offers a three-day course focused around the book.

The Management Book Of The Year award is split into five categories - with five books battling in each one.

There is a winner in each category as well as the overall award for the year's outstanding business text.

Piers Cain, head of knowledge management at CMI, said: "We are delighted with the standard of entries this year and I wish to congratulate Peter on reaching the final."

The awards are in their third year and receive support from the British Library and Henley Business School.

The final will be held at the British Library Conference Centre in London on January 28, 2013.
