A LANDMARK first meeting between education workers under the fledgling Slough Aspire initiative was hailed a success.

Education and business partnership group Learning to Work, formerly East Berkshire Education Business Partnership, led the first meeting of the academic year for work experience co-ordinators, careers advisors and teachers at the IQ Marketing Suite, in Slough Trading Estate, on Thursday last week. The meeting was held for the first time as part of the Slough Aspire initiative - launched in July to equip residents with skills to compete in Slough's thriving business industry.

Nancy Lalor, operations manager for Learning to Work, said: "It is vital that we continue to source and develop as many great business led opportunities as possible for young people, to really help them grasp an understanding of the world of work.

"The impact of work related activities, especially on business premises, is long lived and a great motivator and confidence builder for young people."

Representatives from 29 schools and organisations attended. Workers shared good practice, discussed student needs and learnt local employer initiatives from guest speakers from Lonza Biologics, Thames Valley Regional Network and Raising Participation Partnership, formerly the Berkshire Sub-Regional Group.

Olly Borkowski, Slough & Eton School assistant head, said: "Our partnership with Learning to Work enables our school to make the most of local and national business opportunities, liaise with leading professionals and work with other schools, all within a business environment that promotes the values of enterprise. It's great to have them as a local company working for and with us."

The group will meet once a term. For more information contact Nancy Lalor on n.lalor@learningtowork.org.uk
