So close for Fisher
By Charles Watts
Ross Fisher just missed out on a Ryder Cup spot.
ASCOT’S Ross Fisher saw his Ryder Cup dream finally ended last weekend when he could only finish tied for 10th at the Johnie Walker Championship at Gleneagles.
Going into the final event before Nick Faldo’s team was confirmed, Fisher, who was born at Heatherwood Hospital and learnt his trade at Virginia Water’s Wentworth Golf Club, was 12th in the Ryder Cup standings.
To force his way into the side he would have needed Oliver Wilson to have missed the cut and then secure himself a top three finish.
That wasn’t to be, however, as Wilson battled bravely to finish tied for tenth alongside Fisher despite at one point being six-over-par on the second days play.
Fisher struggled for form during the opening three days but finished on Sunday with a scintillating round of 66 to ensure a spot in the top ten.
That saw him finish just one place short of the automatic qualifying spots for the Ryder Cup and his form over the season was not enough to force his way into Faldo’s mind for his two wild card picks as he plumped for Paul Casey and Ian Poulter.
But the 27-year-old can still be proud of what he has achieved so far this season as he has firmly established himself as one of Europe’s leading lights.
He currently sits ninth in the European Tour Order of Merit and has amassed well over one million euros in prize money.
His biggest highlight was the sensational European Open win at the London Club which saw him storm away from some of the world’s best players to win by seven shots from Sergio Garcia.
The Ryder Cup takes place at Kentucky’s Valhalla Golf Club between September 19-21.
Europe’s team will be: Padraig Harrington, Lee Westwood, Sergio Garcia, Henrik Stenson, Robert Karlsson, Miguel Angel Jimenez, Graeme McDowell, Justin Rose, Soren Hansen, Oliver Wilson, Ian Poulter, Paul Casey.
