My side will bounce back - Wanklyn
By Charles Watts
Wayne Wanklyn says his side will bounce back from last Saturday's defeat.
WOKINGHAM and Emmbrook boss Wayne Wanklyn says his side will not suffer any adverse effects from going down to their first defeat of the season last weekend.
Wanklyn’s table-toppers crashed to a 3-2 home defeat against Henley Town last Saturday and saw their four-point lead cut to just one as Ascot United closed in.
But the Satsumas manager says his team will take the loss in their stride and just focus on getting back to winning ways this weekend when they host neighbours Finchampstead.
He said: “You’re always looking for a response after a defeat and I’m sure I’ll get one.
“The lads were all disappointed that they lost last weekend but it will have no bearing on what happens on Saturday.
“It wasn’t like we played badly against Henley, we actually played pretty well so I don’t see any reason why it will affect how the team is playing.”
He added: “Finch have had an indifferent start to the season. They’ve had a couple of very good results and are on a decent little run so it will be a difficult game.
“Your position in the table goes out the window in local derbies as there’s a different mentality in both sets of players.
“I’m sure it will be a tough test but we want to get back to winning ways so the lads will be really up for it.”
Top scorer Richard Bland is rated at 50/50 for the clash but Bill Elger, David Bellis and Andre Stairman are available. Grant Lewin, Luke Lee and Nicky Bateman are all suspended.
Last weekend’s home defeat at Henley was sealed right at the death after it looked like Wokingham had fought back to snatch a point.
Trailing 2-0 with 25 minutes remaining, they got back to 2-2 thanks to strikes from Sam Whiting and James Wise but the visitors struck the winner with four minutes remaining.
Wanklyn said: “We played quite well and on another day we would have won comfortably. I’ve got no complaints really, it was a game we deserved to win but didn’t. That happens sometimes in football.”
