Finch set for derby clash

FINCHAMPSTEAD boss Neil White has praised the Wokingham & Emmbrook set-up ahead of his side’s trip to the league leaders on Saturday.

The Satsumas started the season in fine form and despite last Saturday’s defeat against Henley Town they still sit top of the table after the first six games.

White believes the Cantley Park outfit are beginning to reap the benefits from the club’s strong youth programme and says the youngsters can fire Wokingham to glory.

He said: “They’ve had a tremendous start to the season, especially when you consider how young a team they have.

“They’ve got the benefit of having an Allied Counties side at Wokingham so they’re bringing some real quality players through.

“They’ve got rid of a few of the older guys and have given youth a chance and you can see it really bodes well for the future.

“A lot of their players have come through the ranks together and that really helps because they know exactly how each other plays.”

Finch head to Wokingham on Saturday on the back of a four-game unbeaten streak and while White acknowledges this will be a real test for his side, he believes they have a chance of getting something from the game.

He said: “It’s another local derby so anything can happen. It’s not going to be easy, we know that but we will go there and put up a fight.

“We’ve got to try and keep this momentum we’ve built up going. We’ve been playing well, the boys have set themselves standards and now they need to try and stick to them.”

Last weekend saw Finch frustrated as they wasted chance after chance during their 1-1 draw at Launton Sports.

Launton keeper Danny Clifford made countless saves to deny the visitors and the home side then edged in front with just 15 minutes remaining through Prince Basanti.

Finch responded well and finally found a way past Clifford on 87 minutes when Kevin Prentice poked home from close range.

White added: “I don’t think their keeper will ever have another game like that. He was making saves with his ear, his elbow. It was just one of those games.”

Finch: Payne, Wright, Carter, Bursill, Hopper, Warner, Dudman, Warner, Thomas, Hogg, Wyatt. Subs used: Prentice, Stephenson, Levey.
