Bracknell safe at last

Bracknell earned a vital 25-point win at league leaders Theale and Tilehurst last Saturday to all but guarantee their survival in Division 5a of the Thames Valley League.

It has still been a disappointing campaign for the men from Larges Lane but skipper Ian Caffell says his side’s end to the season has shown that they can compete with the best in the league.

He said: “The Theale and Tilehurst captain said afterwards that he couldn’t understand why we’re in the position we are.

“Our batting has been the main problem, especially the level of consistency. We have to go away over the winter and work on that.

“But we can take a lot of positives from how we’ve played in the last few games. We’ve shown real character and resistance so we can take a lot of heart from that.”

Jez Daines (58) top scored last Saturday as Bracknell posted 218-7 from their 52 overs but Paul Dewick was the hero thanks to a sensational display with the ball.

He took career best figures of 8-82 as Theale were knocked over for 197. And afterwards Caffell was full of praise for his off-spinner.

He said: “It was a great performance from everyone, but Paul was superb. He constantly put the ball in the right place, I couldn’t have asked any more from him.

“It was so good to see us play like that.

“In every aspect we were one step ahead of Theale and Tilehurst and that is quite an achievement considering they’re top of the league.”
