White targets mid-table
By Chales Watts
FINCHAMPSTEAD boss Neil White has admitted he is delighted with how his young side have started the season.
Finch recorded their first win of the campaign last Saturday when they thumped Newbury 5-1 and two days later they snatched a 1-1 draw at local rivals Binfield.
The four point haul over the Bank Holiday weekend moved White’s men up to mid-table and he says it would be fantastic for the club if they could stay there.
“All credit has to go to the boys, they’ve started really well,” he said. “They’ve all started socialising together and the team spirit is just where we want it to be.
“We’re not getting ahead of ourselves. We know that of the local sides we’re still a bit behind but we are heading in the right direction and we’ll keep trying to surprise a few people.
“If we can stay the way we are and not pick up many injuries then I think we can cause some teams problems.
“If we can finish the season somewhere around mid-table then it would be fantastic for the club but we know there’s still a long way to go yet.”
Dean Thomas fired home a hat-trick in Ascot’s 5-1 win at Henley Town on Saturday with Tom Hopper and Dan Dudman notching the other goals.
Monday’s draw at Binfield was earned by a late strike from new signing Danny Isaiew who gleefully slid in at the back post to net against his former club.
White said: “If you’d said to me before the weekend that we could have four points from those games I would have bitten your hand off.
“We really did play well. We were excellent against Henley and I was so happy to see Dean Thomas getting amongst the goals.
“We rode our luck a bit against Binfield but it was great to see Danny get his goal and, to be fair, I thought we had a good penalty shout at the end so we could even have won it.”
