Walton happy despite defeat
By Charles Watts
Robins boss Byron Walton was pleased with what he saw from his side on Tuesday night.
BRACKNELL Town fell to their first defeat of the season at Burnham on Tuesday night but manager Byron Walton is still more than happy with his side’s start to their Southern League campaign.
The Robins kicked off their season with a fine 2-1 win against highly fancied Bridgwater Town on Saturday and put in another impressive display when they made the short journey to Burnham.
They dominated for large periods but were left to rue a host of missed chances when the home side’s Dan Wilment grabbed the only goal of the game early in the second half.
Despite the defeat, however, Walton is confident that his side will shrug it off and get back to winning ways over the Bank Holiday weekend when they travel to Taunton Town on Saturday before hosting Windsor and Eton on Monday.
He said: “Our heads won’t drop because of the Burnham game. Players know when they’ve come in to the dressing room and played well and they certainly did that on Tuesday night.
“On another day they would have won that game fairly comfortably. I think we must have had 65 per cent of possession and we had some great chances.
“We hit the post, and their keeper made some great saves. It was disappointing that we lost but there were a lot of positives to take from the game.”
He added: “The start we’ve had has been encouraging and now we need to go up to Taunton and get back to winning ways before a very tough game against Windsor on Monday.
“Windsor will be very difficult, they were strong last year and have improved so it will be a tough test but a good one for the team. We’ve got a lot of young players here at the moment and when you’ve got youth in your squad it’s important you start a season well.
“Winning becomes a habit so it will be nice to follow up on the Bridgwater result with another win this weekend as that will give us some real momentum to take forward.
“Last year there was a lot of changes at the club. It wasn’t a very good season even though we avoided relegation so this year we want to get points on the board early so we don’t have another nail-biting end to the campaign.”
Bracknell can count themselves very unfortunate not to have come away from Tuesday’s trip to the Gore with at least a point.
Ben Edwards hit a post during the clash while Dean Thomas and Ian Harvey also went close as the visitors controlled large periods of the play.
But Burnham skipper Wilment grabbed the only goal of the game early in the second half to earn the home side the points and send Walton’s men home with nothing.
The Robins boss said: “I thought we played ever so well. Obviously I was disappointed that we lost but not by the way we played.
“Burnham are a good team and I’m sure they’ll be up the top again but we certainly gave a very good account of ourselves.”
