Fizzers target FA Cup
By Charles Watts
Sandhurst Town boss Pete Browning is hoping for a money spinning cup run this season.
SANDHURST Town kick-off their FA Cup campaign this Saturday with manager Pete Browning hoping for a money spinning run in the world’s most famous cup competition.
The Fizzers make the journey to Oxfordshire to take on Hellenic Premier Division club Kidlington in the extra preliminary round.
Browning knows little about the opposition and admits he would have liked to have had them watched before Saturday’s clash but that proved impossible.
He said: “There’s some good prize money to be won so we want to go on as long a run as possible.
“Kidlington are at the same level as us so this is a good chance for us to progress.
“I don’t know a lot about them and I would have liked to have had them watched but we didn’t really have the resources to do that.
“They were playing Marlow on Tuesday night at Flackwell Heath, but we were at Ash so we couldn’t really get anyone away.”
Sandhurst should welcome back a number of first team players for the clash who missed out on last weekend’s season opener in the Combined Counties League.
Martin Fairminer, Sam Collier and Errol Hutchings will all return having missed the 2-1 home defeat against Banstead last Saturday.
Trailing 1-0 at half-time to a Terry Payne own goal Sandhurst responded well after the break and scored a deserved equaliser through Pete Mulvaney after some fine build-up play from strike partner Mark Corbett.
But a disappointing end to the game saw the visitors snatch the win with 15 minutes remaining when Kevin Terry was left unmarked to head home a corner.
Browning said: “It was a bit disappointing because we were very slow out of the blocks.
“They were deservedly winning at half-time but we came out for the second half and had a real go for 20 minutes. We got a good goal through Pete but after that we seemed to lose our way.
“They were a strong side and we didn’t really match up to them physically. The goals we conceded were pretty poor as well so we know we can do better.”
Sandhurst: Ewen, Weston, Williams, Wilson, Payne, Hogston, Wilde, Nesbitt, Corbett, Mulvaney, Chasker. Subs used: Wheeler, Lee.
