Wokingham set for top two clash
By Charles Watts
Wokingham skipper Martin Bushell says paceman Martin Wilson is in the form of his life.
WOKINGHAM head into their top of the table clash with Farnham Royal this weekend knowing a win would give them valuable breathing space at the top of Division Two West of the Home Counties League.
Farnham will arrive at Wellington Road aiming to protect the only remaining unbeaten record in the league as they attempt to extend their eight-point lead over Wokingham.
But Martin Bushell’s buoyant side go into the game on the back of a good win at Burnham last weekend and the skipper wants his team to send out a message of intent to the rest of the division.
He said: “It’s a very big game, although it’s still early doors you could say it’s a 50 pointer.
“If we beat them well we could go quite a way clear at the top of the table and send out a real message to everybody else.
“They’ve started the season very well and will be difficult to beat but we’ve got some big players like Dan Reddyhough, Simon Myles and Ryan Hiscoe coming back so we’ll be very close to full strength.
“We’ve had a good start. I would have taken three wins from four if offered it before the season begun but now we need to push on and start improving on certain things.”
Bushell admits that his side’s batting form is the only real cause for concern at the moment but he is confident that things will click into place soon enough.
So far this season Wokingham have collected only three batting points and Bushell accepts that the top order has yet to really find its form.
He said: “We’re playing well and we’re picking up wins but I think it’s about time our batting line-up showed what it’s capable of.
“We haven’t really got going in that regards yet but I know we’ve got the players here who can make big scores, so it’s just a matter of time until it happens.”
Last Saturday saw Wokingham bounce back from their previous week’s defeat by claiming a 32 run victory at Burnham.
It was a much needed win after the disappointment of the Basingstoke and North Hants loss and was down in no small part to another top display from Martin Wilson.
Wilson finished with figures of 5-48 as Burnham were skittled out for just 114 while chasing Wokingham’s modest total of 146.
Bushell said: “It was a horrible wicket to play on. It didn’t actually look that bad in the morning but as soon as we started to play we realised that about 170 was going to be a good score.
“We were well on target for that at lunch when we were 78-3, but then we collapsed and fell well short of what we should have got.
“Fortunately Martin was brilliant for us again.
“He’s in the form of his life at the moment and he played a massive part in making sure we got the win.”
