Wilkinson arrives at the Lane
By Charles Watts
Byron Walton has moved quickly to appoint Martin Wilkinson as his new assistant following the daparture of Steve Hale.
BRACKNELL Town manager Byron Walton has installed Martin Wilkinson as his new assistant following the departure of Steve Hale at the weekend.
Hale, who played a vital part in helping the Robins avoid relegation last season, left to look for a more senior managerial role and Walton didn’t waste any time in appointing his successor.
Wilkinson is currently involved with the RAF team and has previously worked north of the border with Kilmarnock and Raith Rovers.
Walton said: “Martin’s a top notch coach. I got to know him through other people and he contacted me when he moved down here.
“He came and watched a couple of games towards the end of last season and he asked me if I knew if anything was going around this way.
“I told him to sit tight until the summer when jobs become available and as soon as I heard that Steve was going I got in touch with him.
“I think he will be a big boost to the club. He has got a good knowledge of the game and will help take us forward.”
Walton and Wilkinson both took in a clash between an Armed Forces team and Holland on Tuesday night as they stepped up their search for new additions.
The Bracknell boss is on the lookout for a handful of players to boost the squad, most notably a striker, and he was confident of finding someone at this week’s game.
He said: “Hopefully there will be players there that we can bring to the club over the summer.
“The players are the best that there are in the Armed Forces today so they will be at a very good standard. I’ve already spoken to quite a few players and I don’t think it will be a problem getting new faces to come here.
“Everyone’s quite buoyant at the moment after avoiding relegation. The squad we finished the season with was very strong and it’s just a matter of adding a bit more quality.
“Realistically we need a goalscorer and possibly a bit more legs in midfield. Apart from that I don’t think we’re far away.”
On Hale’s departure, Walton added: “We wish Steve all the best. He did a very good job for us last season but he’s looking to become a manager now.”
