Browning thankful for support
By Charles Watts
Pete Browning has been touched by the support he received during what ha been a tough season.
SANDHURST Town boss Pete Browning has thanked the club’s committee for the support they showed him during his side’s poor first half of the season.
The Fizzers found themselves stuck in a relegation fight after winning just three of their league games before the turn of the year and looked in danger of dropping out of the Combined Counties Premier League.
But they have turned things round in 2008 and finished 16th despite losing 2-0 to champions Merstham on the final day of the season last weekend.
Browning said: “In the end it was a decent finish considering where we were at Christmas. I’m very pleased for the lads who stuck with it because it meant they got something out of their season.
“We worked hard to turn things around and everyone ended up getting the benefits of that. Hopefully we can take this form into next season now.
“I learnt a lot about ourselves and a lot about other people within the football community this season. It’s amazing how much support you get when you are struggling.
“The support the committee here at Sandhurst gave me was excellent and really helped to keep things settled.”
Browning has already started to plan for next season and he admits he will have to bring in a few new faces to bulk up the squad.
He said: “We’re putting our heads together to try and draw up a bit of a short list of who we want to bring in. Jon Underwood has some ideas and I’ve got some ideas.
“I’ve already spoken to a couple of players who say they are keen to come here and hopefully we can move things forward quite quickly.”
Last Saturday saw Sandhurst complete their league campaign with a 2-0 defeat at runaway champions Merstham.
The defeat brought to an end a five match unbeaten streak for the Fizzers who were missing key players like Danny Wilde, Mark Corbett, Errol Hutchings and Sam Barnett.
The home side went in front after 39 minutes when Mark Simmons’ effort deflected in past a helpless Sam Collier and they doubled their advantage when Matt Frances netted with 10 minutes remaining.
Browning said: “We lost to the best side in the league and there’s no shame in that.
“It was disappointing to lose our unbeaten run but we worked very hard with a depleted team and gave a good account of ourselves.”
