Car lovers: Bob Piggin and Dennis Redman during the Italian Job rally
A PAIR of car enthusiasts took part in an Italian rally to raise funds for charity.
Bob Piggin, 62, and Dennis Redman, 65, both from Sandhurst, took part in The Italian Job 2008.
The pair travelled 3,000 miles in this year’s rally which started in Imola in Northern Italy.
Mr Piggin said: “Our rally experience was not uneventful in the least. We lost our starter motor on day seven with damage to the underside caused by a very high speed hump and had to push-start the car from then on.
“The rally took us around the beautiful region of Emilio Romagna and we did three laps around the San Marino Grand Prix circuit which was amazing.”
The duo had five days to travel the route given and then drove back to Brighton.
All funds raised from the rally go towards KidsOut – a charity which helps over 60,000 disadvantaged children and young people in the UK every year.
Since the original Italian Job rally in 1990, over £2m has been raised for a variety of children’s charities.
This is the third time the pair have done the rally.
Mr Piggin added: “Although we didn’t manage a podium on the rally, we were in the top half of the finishers, which for a 43-year-old car and two drivers with a combined age of 127 is quite an achievement, and we are now finalising our efforts to achieve our fundraising target of £1,500 for the charity.”
