A MAYOR will take his life in his hands as he attempts to drive blindfolded around a rally track to raise money for charity.
Cllr Brian Willis, mayor of Wokingham Town Council, is taking part in the Guide Dogs for the Blind Association's sponsored Blind Drive this Saturday.
Cllr Willis said: "I am really looking forward to taking up the challenge of the Blind Drive, which will undoubtedly test my driving skills to the limit. It will be profound to attempt to do something that I take for granted on a daily basis, but this time without the benefit of my sight."
The event at the Transport Research Laboratory, Nine Mile Ride, Wokingham is open to individuals or teams of four. It will give visually impaired people the chance to try their hand at some off-road driving and give sighted participants the chance to experience driving without the sense of sight, while blindfolded.
Pamela Mills, district fundraising co-ordinator for Guide Dogs, said: "The Blind Drive promises to be a truly exhilarating day out for all the family, all while raising vital funds for Guide Dogs' ongoing work. Other attractions on offer include a giant scalextric, the Guide Dog Experience - watch a guide dog leading blindfolded members of the public through a series of obstacles and a number of interesting stalls. We encourage all off-road enthusiasts to book their place now."
Entry is strictly by prior booking only and participants are asked to raise a minimum of £75 sponsorship. Entrants can also experience driving on the skid pan for £25 or be a passenger in a fast car on the banked circuit at speeds of more than 85mph for a further £15.
