A YOUNG songwriter is hoping to win a competition and £15,000 towards recording his own album.

Edward Bell from Upper Village Road, Sunninghill, is a classically trained singer and pianist who is taking an internet music competition by storm.

The 20-year-old has been posting his music on Slicethepie, a website which enables artists to raise money directly from their fans to professionally record and release an album.

Over the last two years his songs have regularly been voted into the top 15 by fans. But although he has come second and third on a number of occasions, he has not yet won the competition which has a £15,000 prize.

Ed started his training as a choir boy at St George's School in Windsor, the town where he was born. He said: "The school was fantastic for music, we used to spend six hours per day singing.

"My advice to anyone else who wants to become a musician is to get out there and do as many open mic sessions as possible. People in east Berkshire have always been very welcoming to me and it is great for your confidence. Even if you were deaf as a dog they would still encourage you, but if you do well they really let you know about it."

Ed's venues include Jagz , in station Hill, Ascot, and the Old Ticket Hall at Windsor & Eton Riverside station where he will play his next gig, though the date has yet to be confirmed.

The main inspiration for his music is the singer Nick Drake.

Girls are also often muses for his songs, such as Two Continents, which was about being separated from his ex-girlfriend for a month while she went to South America to play hockey.

Listen to Ed's music at www.myspace.com/edwardbell or vote for him by visiting www.slicethepie.com and searching for Edward Bell.
