Booking help: Jane gates receives cheque from staff at Jennings
A BOOKIES made themselves odds-on favourites with a charity by donating £5,000 and a bid on the FA Cup final to their cause.
Newcomers to Bracknell town centre Jenningsbet presented kid’s charity Sebastian’s Action Trust with the donation as part of their official opening celebrations on Saturday.
They also handed over a £100 bet on Portsmouth beating Cardiff 1-0 this weekend, which has netted a further £800. The Trust is working to provide holiday homes and practical support for seriously ill children and their families.
Julian Knight, Managing Director of Jenningsbet which is next door to the charity’s bookshop in Crossway, said they made the donation because they know first hand the pressures that families with an ill child experience.
He said: “My niece had ovarian cancer when she was 16 which is very rare – it was obviously an awful time for us all. Going to the hospital and seeing some of the kids up there opens your eyes to it all.”
Mr Knight, who runs the bookmakers with his brother Greg, said the 70 strong betting chain had wanted to open in Bracknell for the last five years.
Sebastian’s Action Trust director Jane Gates wished them well, saying: “Jenningsbet have been incredibly generous and we are of course delighted – their donation was a great start to a new friendship as neighbours and we hope that both the bookshop and the bookmakers will go from strength to strength.”
